What is The Food for Kids Backpack Program?
The Food For Kids Backpack Program is a program designed to provide nutritious food for children in need of food over the weekends at five Denver Public Schools. These schools include Montclair School of Academics and Enrichment, Lowry Elementary, Park Hill Elementary, Ashley Elementary and Swansea Elementary. Each weekend children go home with a rolling backpack filled with shelf staples as well as fresh nutritious food including items such as bread, oatmeal, peanut butter, jelly, tuna, macaroni and cheese, pasta and spaghetti sauce, fresh fruit and applesauce. The food is nutritious, easy to open, as well as simple to prepare, to accommodate a variety of home circumstances.
Our Mission!
Our Mission is to change lives by providing nutritious food to food-insecure children and their families over the weekends. We hope to help all children in need attending school within the Denver Public School system. We believe children should worry about tether ball and academics and not where their next meal is coming from.
Community
We believe in the power of community. We actively encourage students, families, school staff and the community to give their time treasure and talent to helping others. We believe in always giving students the opportunity to give, and we involve students in preparing backpacks for other students and often for themselves. Children have great pride in themselves, and this giving will positively impact both individuals and communities.
Nondiscrimination Policy
We believe in helping all children and families regardless of race, creed, color, national origin, sex, political affiliation or beliefs. We train our volunteers in inclusiveness and nondiscrimination.
